Chapter Eight
When the sennight was up, they returned to Bothwell Castle with the information about the gathering at Stirling. Although she felt guilty for working against her countrymen, she needed to protect her sons.
Not much had changed in their absence, but the stable lads informed them that there were many more men in chains in the prison tower for suspected treason.
Cara had never felt so exhausted in all her life.
Gabriel helped her down from her horse, but he wasn’t quick to remove his hand from her arm. “Lass, ye have dark circles under yer eyes. Why did ye not ask to ride with me? You could have leaned against me and slept.”
Cara said, “Ye need no’ use yer brogue, Gabriel. Yer back in with the English. There’s no need to pretend any longer.”
It hurt to hear him talk like one of her people, to be truthful. It made it more difficult to remember why she shouldn’t trust him. Why she shouldn’t have feelings for him.
“You are correct, but you evaded my question. Didn’t you sleep last eve?”
“Nay,” she said, deciding to tell him the truth. “I long to see my lads. I fear something may have happened to them. I’ve had dreams…”
“Hopefully, the baron will be pleased enough with your information to allow you one trip to see them.” He held the door for her, and they stepped into the hall on the first floor of the tower. “Come, I’ll take you abovestairs to clean up. Then we’ll return to speak with the baron.”
“Please do not make me wait too long. I must know about my sons,” she pleaded. She’d never been away from them for so long. This separation was extremely painful for her, especially since she knew the boys were frightened and grief-stricken over the loss of their father, but she didn’t know how to make them understand. They were men, and men who lacked children.
“I’ll see what I can do. In the meantime, I’ll send a bath up for you. Find a clean gown, one you had before. Save the lavish ones in case we must return to Edinburgh Castle.”
She climbed up the stairs, level after level, her legs so tired she thought she might fall back down and land in a heap at the base.
Would she care?
Aye, the lads needed her.
Once inside, she settled what few belongings she had before the tub was brought into her private chamber. She’d forgotten to take her saddlebag off her horse, so she didn’t have much. Gabriel paced in the other chamber, his presence a comfort. It made her feel safe to know he was there, watching the door. Keeping the baron away. She took a linen square to wash the dirt and grime of the road from her face, sighing with pleasure when she finally immersed her tired bones in the warm water. Ducking her head under the water, she proceeded to wash away all the smells of Edinburgh.
She had nearly fallen asleep in the warm water when a knock landed on her door.
